The project tries to determine the scope of the transformations that the colonial Phoenician society in the Iberian Peninsula underwent during the 7th. century BC as a consequence of the arrival of new eastern colonists to Occident. Those transformations reached the socioeconomic relations as well as the urban and territorial developments, favouring very important changes in the historic process that can be perceived in the archaeological registry. The fundamental factors to take into account are the growth of pre-existing settlements, their expansion and the creation of new productive and trade locations -some quite far geographically-, as well as the emergence of new cities. Those changes will be studied and assessed through a variety of sectorial analysis, including: petrographic analysis of pottery, studies on epigraphical material, analysis of systems of weights and measures, archaeological study of settlements and their territorial projection, fractal mathematic research focused on colonization, as well as mitocondrial DNA analysis in order to establish the possible kindred relations within the same site and to determine the origins of individuals arriving in Occident during the “second wave of Phoenician colonization”. The researches that we propose converge with the W. F. Albright Institute for Archaeological Research projet: “The Neo Assyrian Empire in the 7th century BC. The main role is played by the star molecule called DNA. The molecules preserved in ancient biological remains have been of great interest to scholars in anthropological and archaeological environments. Thus, there are many studies on proteins, lipids and carbohydrates less often old. However, the biomolecule is further analyzed the DNA to be the most comprehensive information and can provide the best preserved over time. Intrapopulation level it aims to establish family relationships among individuals who have appeared buried together, the determination of social rank and reconstruction of the social organization of ancient populations, as well as Genetic characterization of populations that can generate mutations diseases. Interpopulation level can make a comparison of DNA sequences from different populations to estimate the degree of relatedness between these sequences and thus between populations or between sites, calculation of time elapsed since a species diverged from a common ancestor; study of ancient expansion, contraction, demographic and migration, analysis of possible racial and human evolutionary history. For all these reasons the analysis of ancient DNA is of great interest in a context such as the Phoenician colonization in the West.

mitocondrial (Hagelberg y cols., 1994; Lalueza y cols., 1997)

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;"> Son menos numerosas las

our work underscores the effectiveness of Y-chromosomal variability
when combined with appropriate computational analysis for studying
complex patterns of human migration, as well as the utility of wide
geographical sampling with the use of a uniform marker set. This
method is applicable to any type of genetic information from which
descent could be inferred, such as mtDNA or autosomal regions with
limited recombination, and within which enough markers are available
to establish phylogeny. The numbers of sites passing at α = 0.3 and
α = 0.05 levels to produce aggregates significant at the 5% level
for various numbers of sites tested are outlined in Table 4.
Therefore, even rather small sets at relatively low levels of
significance can yield useful signal. Further applications could
include systematic investigations of military expansions, such as the
Greek signal, from the time of Alexander the Great in central and
south Asia; or the Mongol signal, carried through the military and
trade-regulation activities to regions from China to Moscow and south
through North India, Iran, and Iraq. Trade and colonization without
substantial military intervention also drove wealth and technological
and cultural development. Examples of ways that genetic migration was
mediated might include the silk and spice roads, which connected
China with the Middle East through to Europe, as well as to spice
sources in India and Indonesia, and the Incense Road, which connected
India through the southern Arabian Peninsula. The Viking expansion
involved not only raids but also significant trade and colonization,
in multiple waves. Important African centers of trade include
Timbuktu, with archaeological evidence showing that Great Zimbabwe
enjoyed goods from as far away as China. To complement investigations
of known migrations, our methodology could also be used to search
systematically for signals of expansion within a data set, starting
from each site in turn, and could thus potentially discover
unrecorded migrations as well” (Zalloua et al., 2008: 642).

PROJET TITLE: SARDINIA AND IBIZA: TWO MODELS OF RURAL SETTLEMENT IN THE PUNIC PERIOD.
SUMMARY:
After some years of research on rural settlement in Punic Ibiza, our team wishes to apply its methodology and its results to west-central area of Sardinia in the same period (Vth-IInd c.B.C.). In collaboration with a team of the University of Glasgow, we will study (as we did in Ibiza) the unpublished archaeological material of old surveys and excavation, the coins that were circulated, as well as the territory from the point of view of human settlement, Geomorphology and soil quality. An anthropological study of ancient people there is also considered.
We will then be able to put forward many comparisons between both areas, highlighting the differences and the similarities, as well as an historical analysis of their evolution through time and of their relations with the power of Carthage.

PROJECT TITLE: Mediterranean Nautic and Oceanic Navigation in the Antiquity. Interdisciplinary Research (Historical, Archaeological, Iconographic and Ethnographic) for Its Study. The Question of the Atlantic Seacoast.

SUMMARY:
The ancient nautical studies include a prominent historical tradition, nevertheless, the analyses since interdisciplinary optic, integrating the achievements obtained in the last two decades by different disciplines, with diverse methodology, but with common theoretical background, they are almost nonexistent.

The present project intends to continue a strategy that integrate diverse disciplines as the ancient history, the archeology, the naval architecture, the nautical ethnography and the historical climatology. For it, it will coordinate the joint efforts of a human team with reputable experience in the disciplines cited (to see curricula and prior contributions), to obtain an integral approximation to the knowledge of the ancient nautical one since all the perspectives that condition it.

The basic objectives would be:
1-One of the most novel objectives will be to verify the conditions of navigation and naval frecuentation in the Atlantic sector between Gibraltar and the Canary Islands por un lado y el litoral portugués por el otro during the antiquity, jointly with the central role played by Gadir in this process. Since a nautical point of view, will be particularly important to verify if in the Antiquity it had developed an specific oceanic nautical tradition (Atlantic), or if was transfer to the Atlantic the types of ships and nautical principles developed previously in the Mediterranean, without coming to give the leap to the navigation oriented by means of the esteem (without visual coastal references). Of this budget, the interpretation drifts from the iconographic and archaeological remainders recently documented in the Canary Islands, Morocco and Portugal, what will permit to know if it was a matter of organized navigations, or well, as results of occasional and fortune navigations.

2- Critical revision of the documentary corpus of protohistoric and classical naval iconography of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, from the contribution of the naval archeology, the historical sources and the nautical ethnography.

3- Analysis of the archaeological register, basically amphorae, like indicator of sea routes in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.

4- Undertaking an integral study of the relationship between the man and the sea in the exploitation of marine resources (fishing, salt) and the role of the sea as a way of contacts and exchanges.

5- Revision of the storage deposits of several museums (Rabat for Kerné-Mogador and the Museum Canario and the Archaeological Museum of Tenerife in the Canaries) of old excavations, and to continue the coastal research survey of the Atlantic Moroccan coast and of the Canary Islands..
F. Albright Institute of Archaeological Research)

La investigación planteada converge con el proyecto del Albright Institute for Archaeological Research : “The Neo Assyrian Empire in the 7th century BC. A Study of Interactions between Center and Peryphery”

PROJET TITLE: PERIPHERY AND CENTER. THE PHOENICIAN SETTLEMENT IN THE WEST AND THE NEOASSYRIAN EMPIRE AT 7th CENTURY BC.

SUMMARY:
The researches that we propose converge with the A Albright Institute for oArchaeological Research projet: “The Neo Assyrian Empire in the 7th century BC. A Study of Interactions between Center and Peryphery”
